Transforming a Craftsman Home: A Denver Interior Design Project

Denver Interior Designer

Embarking on this project with the goal of enhancing a beloved Craftsman home was both exciting and rewarding. My recent project aimed to transform this beautiful Craftsman home into a more spacious, functional, and modern living space while preserving its unique character. Here's a detailed look at our journey and the stunning results.

Project Goals and Scope

The primary goals for this Denver interior design project were to:

  • Reconfigure the kitchen layout for more space.

  • Add a back entrance mudroom.

  • Update the living room furniture for better flow.

  • Excavate the basement for taller ceilings and create a more livable space.

  • Design a kid-friendly hangout area in the basement.

  • Create a larger guest bathroom and bedroom.

The scope of the project included:

  • A new kitchen layout.

  • Adding a mudroom.

  • Installing new stairs to the basement.

  • Excavating the basement.

  • Reconfiguring the basement layout.

  • Enlarging the guest bathroom and bedroom.

  • New flooring throughout the house.

Inspiration and Style

The inspiration for this Denver interior design project was a fun, eclectic style with modern touches, all while honoring the Craftsman home’s heritage. The family already owned many unique and fun pieces that we wanted to incorporate into the design. The style was a blend of Craftsman, mid-mod touches, modern, and transitional elements. This mix created a vibrant and harmonious space that reflects the family’s personality and lifestyle.

Key Elements and Products

We selected high-quality furniture and fixtures to enhance the design, including:

  • Furniture from Rove Concepts and CB2.

  • A Room & Board table and chairs for the dining room.

  • A Herman Miller pendant for lighting.

  • Vintage items that the family already had, adding a personalized and nostalgic touch.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite the broad scope of this project, the process went smoothly thanks to the wonderful clients and their clear vision. The only real challenge was a delay in permits from the city, which is a common hiccup in large-scale renovations.

Detailed Transformations

Kitchen and Mudroom

We reconfigured the kitchen layout to create more space and functionality, making it the heart of the home. Adding a back entrance mudroom provided a practical and stylish solution for the family’s everyday needs.

Living Room

Updating the living room furniture improved the flow and comfort of the space. We incorporated modern pieces while maintaining the Craftsman home’s charm.

Basement

The most significant transformation was excavating the basement to achieve taller ceilings, making it a more livable and enjoyable space. The reconfigured layout included a spacious TV area and a kid-friendly hangout zone, perfect for family activities and relaxation. Additionally, we enlarged the guest bathroom and bedroom to offer more comfort and privacy for visitors.

Flooring

New flooring throughout the home tied all the spaces together, creating a cohesive and polished look.
